Slow Cooker Applesauce Recipe
I saw an easy and frugal homemade applesauce recipe recently on a food blog that I follow = Cookin Cannuck = that was too intriguing to pass up! Thanks, Dara, for sharing your family recipe for Crock Pot Applesauce!
I, of course tinkered with it a little, adding lemon juice and a little extra sugar to compensate, and the resulting substance was so delicious, I decided “applesauce” is word that is too inadequate to capture the yumminess – hence: Apple Bliss!!! Some more legume love coming your way – I eat lentils more regularly than just about any other pantry staple. Dahl, soups, and stews are the most common, but I’m always up for more. Of course, the Legume Love Affair event is the perfect excuse! (Thanks to Susan for the original concept!) Continue reading ‘Loving the Legumes: Lentilburgers’

Two great tastes that taste great together – Halloween and frugality! One of my guilty pleasures has always been Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups – it was always my favorite on Halloween. A Show-Stopping Fall Feast: Pumpkin Stew served in a Pumpkin
This is one of our family’s favorite fall feasts – a pumpkin stew in a pumpkin recipe. When my kids were little, they would clap and cheer as I brought the finished pumpkin to the table. It looks gorgeous in the middle of the table and when you serve it, you use a large spoon or ladle to scoop some of the roasted pumpkin flesh from the inside of the pumpkin. It is unique, delicious and frugal. Once you try this recipe, it will become a fall tradition in your house, I promise!
Over the years the basic idea of filling a hollowed pumpkin with soup has remained the same, but I have changed the soup recipe substantially. This year, I discovered the secret of making flavorful vegetarian vegetable soup: ROASTING THE VEGETABLES! Seriously, boiled vegetables are just about as bland as, well, boiled vegetables. But, if you roast them in chunks so that they have a caramelized outside and them simmer them briefly, the soup is about a million per cent tastier than the boiled version without resorting to beef broth to add flavor. I will never make vegetable soup the same again!

Festive Jack-o-Lantern Cheese Ball Halloween Recipe
I promise this jack-o-lantern cheese ball recipe will make you the hit of any Halloween celebration!
I was looking for something savory and orange to roll the cheese ball in and finally the light bulb went on: crushed Nacho Cheese Doritos! They are the perfect color for a jack-o-lantern and add a little zip, too. I know they’re not the healthiest thing you can put in your mouth, but really the color is perfect and you’re only using a little bit of crumbs.

Ten Minute Dinner: Whole Wheat Tortillas with Black Bean Puree
If you are in a more-than-usual near-crisis stage and need to get dinner on the table PRONTO, this Black Bean Puree Recipe can’t be beat both time- and flavor-wise! This is a new twist on a plain burrito – so pretty, fun and different! It takes ten minutes max to get this on the table, and that includes opening the cans!
Black beans are nutitional powerhouses, and so yummy and easy to work with. Short of takeout, I challenge anyone to find a healthier speedy dinner.

October is officially National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. All kinds of related events take place during October: The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure takes place in cities across the country, the American Cancer Society holds its Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event, and National Mammography Day takes place on Friday, October 16th.
A couple of years ago, when I was doing a lot of party planning and catering, specializing in theme menus, the more inventive the better, a friend asked me to cater a unique party. A childhood cancer survivor, she and her mother had decided to throw a big bash celebrating 20 years of being cancer-free. Having been to a few shindigs of mine before, she knew the kind of funky, funny food I loved to put together, and she wanted her own food to be very irreverent, sort of thumbing her nose and laughing in the face of cancer. An example she thought of was serving deviled eggs – with black olive “tumors” in them. I asked if she really, REALLY wanted me to run with that, and she insisted she did, as long as it was still good food, so off I went, creating a whole menu devoted to different kinds of cancer.
One of my favorite items I invented for that menu was the “Mammo-Graham”, which I share with you here today in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Continue reading ‘Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Get your Mammo-Grahams!’

Anne's Food-Network-Worthy ULTIMATE VEGGIE CHILI
If you haven’t tried Anne’s ULTIMATE VEGGIE CHILI recipe, put this on your “Must Try” list this Fall! It is easily the best veggie chili I have ever eaten. It has a fabulous rich, smoky flavor and texture and is very frugal. It is packed with budget-friendly healthy protein in the form of beans and tofu.
We originally featured it in our very first food collaboration, the co-authored cookbook, “1o1 Things To Do With Tofu”. A few months after it was published, Anne was chosen as a finalist for the Food Network’s Ultimate Recipe Showdown series two seasons ago, and she made it on to the show to compete and came in Second Place in her category! Last week I appeared on Utah’s Studio 5 to share the recipe, so I thought it warranted a repeat here. — Donna
We applaud food blogger Cook Sister for hosting the blog event “My Legume Love Affair” this month, and The Well Seasoned Cook for starting this event. This post is an entry to this event (stay tuned for more legume posts and entries soon!) Really, shouldn’t we all eat more legumes?
